Thomas Arrives!

It's hard to believe that this was the first time I've made a Thomas cake.. with all the little men in my life who are, or have been, crazy about Thomas!
This was a chocolate/buttercream with fondant accents.  Thomas was a little cake (that took a lot of time) covered in fondant!

It's that time of year!

This cake was made for a high school graduate (with a very proud mother!), who is planning to pursue a nursing career.  The base is made up of white cake with buttercream and the mortar board is chocolate.  All accents are made of fondant.  The school colours made for a very bold and vibrant cake!

Mom's Birthday Cake!

Anyone who knows my mother knows that she is crazy about chocolate!  For her birthday, I made a chocoate cake with chocolate ganache filling and glaze - thought she'd approve!  To add a touch of colour, I made a three toned purple gumpaste flower.
I was very happy with the contrast of the brown and purples...the chocolate ganache didn't let me down either!
Happy Birthday to you Mom!!!

Movie Themed Birthday Party with a Little More Bling!

I was asked to make two dozen jumbo cupcakes for an 8 year old's movie themed birthday party.  Half were cupcake versions of the large popcorn cake I previously made.  Again, the popcorn is made of white chocolate...love making it!  I was not able to find the red and white striped cupcake liners without having to order them online.  Making them out of red and white striped paper I found at a craft store worked just as well!  I was happy with the way these turned out!
Gave me a hankering to go see a movie...with popcorn of course!
The other half of the cupcakes were to have a lot more "bling"!  Half had gold stars made of gumpaste, with gold glitter.  Each was wrapped in a mini boa to really dress it up...so fun!!!

The other half featured gold gumpaste "8"s with more glitter and a bit of ribbon to make them a little more fancy!

The "bling" cupcakes were cotton candy flavoured.  I've never made cotton candy cake/cupcakes      before, and have actually never heard of them.  Searches around the city for cotton candy flavouring were     unsuccessful.  I opted for using real cotton candy, which I found in pink and yellow, the colours that had been requested.  Each cupcake was baked with cotton candy in the centre and small "whifts" of cotton candy                                                        candy were mixed in with the icing.

So glamourous!!!

Batman and Superman for two of my Little Superheroes!

So, "Thing 1" and "Thing 2" turned 4 a couple of weeks ago!  I can't believe how fast time is going by and that Elmo and Cookie Monster are having to make way for "big kid" stuff, like superheroes!
Isaac requested a Batman cake.  He tried to change his "order" to a Transformers cake at the last minute, with his main argument being that one of his friends from daycare who was coming to his birthday party really likes Transformers.  The little man made a wise decision and went back to Batman when I reminded him that it was his cake!!!

Sam requested Superman.  I'm trying to stick with "pure" cakes, where everything used is edible and figures are made of fondant or gumpaste.  Well, the figures didn't get made but I was relieved we had some kicking around when Isaac got a sneak peak at Sam's cake and was very concerned that there was no Superman on top.  The kid had a point and, after all, he was the Birthday Boy!  On went the action figures!

Baby Shower or Retirement Party?

This slab was made to feed 100 people at a retirement party.  It was 1/2 chocolate, 1/2 vanilla, with a buttercream filling and fondant accents.  As I was making the little violets, I realized I was close to 30, so made sure there were that many, one for each year of the retiree's career - no wonder it takes me so long to make a cake!  I think the baby toes and curl are my favourite parts!!!
