Cute and Simple!

I love this cake!  The colours, the lines and, most of all, the simplicity of it!

 Flowers are so fun to make...almost a little theraputic!

 I didn't worry about the chocolate being perfect, I think because I wanted it to have a really natural and basic feel!  It's just so darn cute!!!

If you know what Bakugan is, this should look a little familiar!

When the birthday boy's mom mentioned that he liked Bakugan, I started to think of how I could make this popular children's toy out of cake.  I decided to make it look like the Bakugan symbol, rather than a 3-D toy, and this is what I came up with.  For those of you not familiar with Bakugan, it's a little ball type toy that opens into some sort of creature (like a dragon) when it's rolled.  (That's the best I can do for an explanation, it's a little tricky to describe!).  As I was making it, I started to think of it as painting and really enjoyed working with the colours!  I also appreciated that I did not have to make it look perfect and flawless!  All of the red is done with fondant, while the rest is buttercream.

Just this past weekend, we celebrated 3 birthdays in our family and it made the most sense to combine them into one party!  Of course the 3 year old gets dibs on his choice of cake...we have to throw the little man a bone considering he hasn't had an actual birthday yet (he's a leap year baby)!  My brother-in-law celebrated his 40th, so it seemed only fitting to put a giant 40 in the back!  My dad's a pretty laid back guy, so he just got his age added to the license plate along with the other two!!! He'll get something just for him for the big one next year!  It was a lot of work but I thoroughly enjoyed making this, even the hubcaps!!!

For one of my favourite people in the world!!!

For my Grandma's 101st birthday, I planned an afternoon tea (at my wonderful cousin's house) for her daughters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters and a few close family friends.  The "boys" and children were allowed to come afterwards for cake!  I asked people to wear hats so, of course, the cake had to fit the theme...and a good old fashioned hat box it was!

Engagement Cake!

A cute little cake to celebrate a newly engaged couple!  The flower ended up taking far longer than anticipated due to issues with the colour and I ended up having to make it out of fondant instead of gumpaste.  Good experience though...can't wait to make flowers again soon!

Mr. Hancock's first birthday cake...ever!!!

I was honoured to make my nephew's first birthday cake when they were home for a visit at Christmas!  Owls have been a part of the little man's life since before he made his debut into the world.  His nursery is decorated with amazing fabrics and patterns which all tie into the owl theme.  When he was born, my sons gave their new little cousin a sweet book featuring a funky little owl.  My sister brought it home with her and asked that I use it as the inspiration for the cake!  I was happy to oblige!

Valentine's Day for Pacman!

Once again, my 9 year old son has influenced the design of a cake!  Ben was very excited to provide me with a sketch of his idea for a pacman Valentine's Day cake.  Using his ideas (and a few of my own) this was the result!  I'd never thought of making a yellow and white Valentine's Day cake, let alone one featuring Pacman!!!  We were very happy with the way it turned out...it's nice to break the mould sometimes!!!
